GETSEA offers graduate students opportunities to learn from faculty across the field, meet peers with shared interests, strengthen language and research skills, and take part in a broader community of Southeast Asian studies scholars.
Take a Mini-Course
Enroll in GETSEA’s free virtual courses on specialized Southeast Asian studies topics that may not be available at your home institution. GETSEA Mini-Courses bring together graduate students and faculty from institutions across North America and Southeast Asia.
Join a Mentoring Cluster
GETSEA PhD Mentoring Clusters connect small groups of early-stage doctoral students with a faculty mentor around shared regional, thematic, or methodological interests. Clusters provide sustained mentorship, peer community, and opportunities for professional and intellectual development.
Get Support for Language Study
Access Southeast Asian language courses beyond your home institution through GETSEA’s partnership with the Southeast East Asian Language Council. Eligible students can apply for support for cross-institutional language study.
Develop Professional Skills
Participate in workshops, conference programming, research preparation sessions, book discussions, film screenings, and other events designed to connect graduate students with scholars and professional resources across the field.
Help Shape GETSEA
The GETSEA Graduate Student Council brings together graduate students from across the United States to provide a student perspective on GETSEA programs and priorities. Council members contribute to working committees, help develop programming, and strengthen connections among graduate students across institutions.

Faculty and Postdoctoral Scholars
Teach, mentor, collaborate, and connect with students and colleagues across the field.
GETSEA creates opportunities for faculty and postdoctoral scholars to share expertise, mentor graduate students, develop cross-institutional programming, and build connections across Southeast Asian studies.
Teach a Mini-Course
Propose a short virtual course in your area of expertise. Mini-Courses allow faculty and postdoctoral scholars to reach graduate students across institutions and offer specialized training that may otherwise be difficult for students to access.
Mentor Graduate Students
Faculty can participate in GETSEA mentoring initiatives, including leading PhD Mentoring Clusters organized around shared research, regional, theoretical, or methodological interests.
Share Opportunities with Your Students
GETSEA programs are designed to complement the resources available at individual universities. Encourage graduate students to explore Mini-Courses, mentoring, language support, professional development events, and other opportunities available across the consortium.
Collaborate on Programs and Events
GETSEA works with scholars and institutions to develop virtual and in-person programming, including workshops, film screenings, professional development activities, and other initiatives that strengthen Southeast Asian studies across institutional boundaries.

GETSEA is based at a consortium of member institutions, but many of our courses, events, mentoring initiatives, and networking opportunities are open to students and scholars from institutions across North America, and in many cases for those around the world. Eligibility and priority vary by program, so check individual opportunity pages for details.
